Gov. Charlie Baker tried to distance himself from Joe Biden’s recent vaccine mandate decree, despite the Baker-Polito recently announced mandates that 42,000 state employees get vaccinated or face consequences of fines and losing their jobs. This comes on top of their recent mandates for vaccinations of over 100,00 nursing home and home health care workers.
Baker issued an executive order last week that all state employees must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination on or by Oct. 17, with specific and dire consequences laid out for those who don’t comply.
Yet, in an incredible display of doublespeak, Baker tried to distance himself from President Joe Biden’s new federal vaccine mandates, announced on September 9th. According to the Boston Herald, a new set of federal vaccine conditions will set mandates for as many as 100 million American workers to show proof of vaccination as a condition of employment, or acquiesce to weekly COVID tests to keep their jobs.
The Herald article indicates that Baker’s handlers “defiantly signaled there would be no statewide COVID vaccine mandate for Massachusetts educators.” Yet, the Governor has punted on setting that in stone, saying it’s up to cities and towns. The Baker-Polito administration tried that excuse when it came to masking children in schools. Until they flipped and used the Secretary of Education and DESE as cover for forcing a statewide mask mandate on kids, who happen to be the least vulnerable to the virus according to the data.
So, what is it? Do the Governor and Lt. Governor support vaccine mandates or not? If you believe in medical autonomy, or local and institutional rule rather than state or federal government edict in such issues, than Baker and Polito must rescind the MA state employee mandate now. And do they support vaccine mandates on workers in businesses with over 100 employees? Baker and Polito can’t have it both ways just because their acquiescence to a failing Biden presidency makes them look bad on this critical issue.
The people of Massachusetts deserve to know where he stands on this blatant intrusion of our civil rights.
I hope you will support my candidacy for Governor of Massachusetts, because I will respect and protect YOUR rights.
